Further Description:
Unusual juxtaposition of Greek Revival and Bungalow styles. Older Greek portion faces E. Clinton, and is a cottage-like Greek Revival. Gable roof has entablature returns; all openings flat-topped; door flanked by boards only hinting at pilasters; one window opening in each gable end. Bungalow addition at rear, and facing Monroe St., has a rolled roof over the porch (partly enclosed), and a slightly rounded pediment over the entrance to the porch. An addition to the NE rear juts out beyond the Greek portion and joins the bungalow section.
History and Significance:
Unusual stylistic joining of two distinct styles and structures. It appears the original Greek house was built about 1855 by Samuel Hamlin, an early millwright in Napoleon, who owned property from 1854-1870. Property then owned by two prominent Napoleonites, William Sheffield and William Durbin until 1908. About 1925 it was remodeled with the bungalow addition.
Description of Environment and Outbuildings:
On large corner lot, at edge of residential/commercial area.
