Further Description:
High steeple (cross 200 ft. above street) with tin work surrounding. The Gothic arch throughout, frequently compounded and of different proportions. Tower over main entrance in center of structure - acanthus leaf caps on tower columns. Stone and brick trim; bricks define multiple geometric insets. Stained and leaded windows abound in side walls and front facade apse in rear. Interior: much original fabric remains. Gothic feeling throughout, including soaring pendant ceiling. Oak wainscoting pews, elaborate carved wooden alter. Alterations: new front etched and plain glass doors. Original wood steps replaced by concrete. Wooden crosses on corner of building now removed and communion rail gone. Basement windows set under bevelled stone water table have been cement blocked.
History and Significance:
Founded by Fr. Michael Pietz, and named for Augustine Pilliod, builder of the first church. Cost $21,893, worked on by numerous craftsmen and builders. St. Augustine's parish founded 1856-58. This is the second church. It was 7 years before the altars were installed. Significant architecturally and historically.
